History of the Department

            The Department of English, Providence College has a longstanding tradition of quality and excellence since its inception in 1967. With only 11 students to start with, the department has grown from strength to strength in these sixty glorious years. The P.G. programme was started in 2004, followed by M.Phil. in 2014 and Doctoral Research in 2018. The lyrics of the college song, "Among the birds and flowers of Providence" was composed by Sr. Patricia Adams, a faculty of the department.      The department excels in teaching and research, promotes critical inquiry and analytical diversity, fosters intellectual growth and social responsibility, and also enhances growth and talent training students in language, literature, communication and liberal arts.       The accomplishments of the students are witnessed through securing University ranks every year, clearing NET/SET examinations, completing Doctoral progra...

Vision Learning to unlearn on the lap of literature. To be open to learn, understand and internalize concepts for a better life. Mission To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour. The mission of the department, are William Blake's lines which contains a load of meaning. To teach the students to view even the tiniest of things with importance as they contain aspects of the whole. To learn to view the world through literature.
